if my turn came before strunosil, and it did, then i was entitled to “dibs” on pafko, unless
we were on a clock, which we were not.

OF - Elmer Valo

Elmer Valo (given name Imrich) emigrated to the United States from Czechoslovakia at the age of six, and holds the distinction of being a member of three franchises who relocated during his playing days: the Philadelphia Athletics to Kansas City, the Brooklyn Dodgers to Los Angeles, and the Washington Senators to the Twin Cities. Valo, who missed four years due to military service with the Army, was an aggressive line-drive hitter (just 58 career HRs) with a fearlessness on defense that often saw him crashing into outfield walls. In his later years, Valo was a premier pinch-hitter, setting records in 1960 for walks and times on base as a pinch-hitter. At the time of his retirement, Valo held the career record for walks as a pinch-hitter with 91. On May 1, 1949, Valo was the first player to hit two bases-loaded triples in the same game, a feat that has been matched only twice since.

OF - Jeff Heath

Ontario, Canada-born Jeff Heath was one of the most promising power-hitters of the late 1930s and 40s. In 1941, Heath became the first American League player in history to hit 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in the same season, a feat not duplicated until George Brett in 1979. During spring training in 1938, Indians manager Ossie Vitt said Heath was the best natural hitter he'd seen since Joe Jackson. For Heath, however, his potential would never be reached as his mercurial personality would often affect his play, with sportswriter Franklin Lewis writing in 1949, "(Heath)...should have been one of the greatest players in history. But there were no valves on his temper. He grinned in the manner of a schoolboy or he snarled with the viciousness of a tiger." In 1939, Heath punched a fan during a home game, and later, player-manager Lou Boudreau would describe Heath as a "problem child" who played with no hustle..."no nothing. If a ball went by him, he just might walk after it."

Allie Reynolds P 7th rnd (74) 4 yr contract
"Superchief" Allie Reynolds was a member of the Muscogee (Creek) Indian tribe through his father who did not approve of sports. Alliie, however, persisted and won a track schorarship to Oklahoma A&M where he also played football. Henry Iba, who at the time coached baseball at A&M "discovered" Reynolds throwing the javelin and recruited him to pitch batting practice. The rest is history. Reynolds also received offers to play football with the New York Giants but signed, of course, with the Cleveland Indians. He was traded to the Yankees (for Joe Gordon) in October. 1946 and promptly became their best pitcher, leading the American League in winning percentage in 1947.

Ken Keltner 3B

Ken Keltner was a top third baseman during his time in the majors, often being named to the All-Star team in the 1940s while playing for the Cleveland Indians. His most impressive year with the bat was probably 1948, late in his career, when he hit 31 home runs with 119 RBI. His team went on to win the 1948 World Series that year.

Keltner helped in the ending of Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak in 1941. Playing third base for the Indians, Keltner made two backhanded plays that would have been hits had he not caught them.

He was a truck driver when discovered playing softball in 1936 by the minor league Milwaukee Brewers. After two strong years in the minors, he became quite prominent in the majors as a third baseman, being named as an All-Star seven times in a thirteen-year career.

3B 1946 Grady Hatton

SMed strubrosII - (CHW)

Grady Hatton never saw a major league baseball game until he was 23 years old. He saw that first one on the Cincinnati Reds opening day in 1946... and played in it. It also was the first professional game he had ever played in and he went on to play in some 1,600 more.

A left-handed hitting infielder, he led National League third basemen in fielding in 1949, NL second basemen in 1952 and American League third basemen in 1954.
