OF - Jeff Heath
Ontario, Canada-born Jeff Heath was one of the most promising power-hitters of the late 1930s and 40s. In 1941, Heath became the first American League player in history to hit 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in the same season, a feat not duplicated until George Brett in 1979. During spring training in 1938, Indians manager Ossie Vitt said Heath was the best natural hitter he'd seen since Joe Jackson. For Heath, however, his potential would never be reached as his mercurial personality would often affect his play, with sportswriter Franklin Lewis writing in 1949, "(Heath)...should have been one of the greatest players in history. But there were no valves on his temper. He grinned in the manner of a schoolboy or he snarled with the viciousness of a tiger." In 1939, Heath punched a fan during a home game, and later, player-manager Lou Boudreau would describe Heath as a "problem child" who played with no hustle..."no nothing. If a ball went by him, he just might walk after it."
