Joe Shultz made ony 368 plate appearances in nine seasons in the major leagues. He had one career home run. He was the son of Joe "Germany" Schultz, who played with several teams from 1912-1925 and later managed the St. Louis Cardinal's innovative farm system. Joe, Jr. was a coach for the Cardinals from 1963-1968. In 1969 he was named manager of the exp ansion Seattle Pilots but was replaced following their very sad first season when the team was purchased by a group headed by future MLB Commissioner, Bud Selig, and moved to Milwaukee and and renamed the Brewers. The Pilots only season was immortalized by Jim Bouton's "infamous" baseball saga, Ball Four.
