Ugh. It's supposed to count LOLs. Not for some arbitrary and ill-conceived rating system.
How can it count LOLs when there's no actual counter anywhere? You're trying to pound a square peg in a triangular hole, man.
The original concept was a lolcounter, and that's how it was pitched internally at WIS. It wound up being augmented into this BS rating system.
Controversy sells. It's marketing 101. Why give us an easily understood system, when they can give us an opaque, confusing one?
It's also the more generic forum tool that others have used across the interwebs. LOLcounting was a new concept that they must have thought the people wouldn't embrace.

I can't remember if I wasn't supposed to tell you guys about the internal drama there. I think they even tried to use an injunction against tinman. So I probably shouldn't have divulged anything. Just keep that in-house.

Shtickless itself originated from being too cool to pander towards a niche. We started posting here and figured people would come because we're so cool.

Forum rating is made for the WBP generation.

when i asked why post counts were reset wis made a huge deal about how some who hadnt really earned the status a large post count seems to represent would be unduly rewarded.

as if the forums arent just one big popularity contest.

post count doesn't mean anything.

The one thing that will matter is when we have 1,000 post day.  Which might just turn into 1,000 post 24 hours, thanks to the paranthesees next to our names.

You're like a straw man factory.

I think we all agree they should have put counters on the thumbs, and I don't think anyone here thinks the whole "forum rating" development is anything more than a curiosity.

i think a passive intention of forum rating is to promote civility, because now any negative comment in another forum about another comment will potentially harm your rating
