I can make this pickup (i.e., losing about 85 innings) due to '82 Fernando Valenzuela pitching surprisingly well after an extended benching. After his first 9 starts, Valenzuela was 0-4 with an 8.19 ERA. I had enough innings to be able to move him to mop-up duty with an occasional spot start. Blyleven was so bad that I decided to give Fernando another chance (and move Bert to mop-up). In his last 15 starts, he went 11-3 with a 3.25 ERA.
