Sunday Morning Report: Things I learned this week Topic

In my progressive that started in 1941, Eddie Mathews just ended a consecutive game streak of 2,121 games, by missing the 16th game of his 14th season, and has played in every other game the rest of the season so far for 2,252 total games out of 2,253 team games played during his career. His career .293/.399/.531 with 546 HRs, 1,665 RBI, 1,606 Runs, and 2,528 hits is also quite impressive!
is there a link showing career leaders in single season progressives? It would be fascinating to see how some of the players career stats played out.

Every league has it's own list, but it's only viewable by league owners.

You do end up with some interesting stat lines though... in a prog I'm in right now (in it's 18th season, starting from 1980), Eddie Murray would probably be considered "one of the greatest players of all time", and a "sure-fire, first ballot hall of famer".  Retired after 17 seasons, he sported a lifetime .320/.394/.528 line and holds the league records for hits (3390), 2B (580), HR (512) and RBI's (2047).  Eddie freakin' Murray.

1. Today isn't Sunday but the boy is asleep and the girl is at the beach with her mother......presto WIS time.
2. I struggle with the value of mid to late round draft picks.  Eighty percent of the time I can find OF's and RP with great numbers with the 4th to 7th round of the draft.   While it's hard to get people to pony up a 1st round draft pick in a trade it's pretty easy to beat an extra 4th out of them.
3. Javier Vazquez is a hell of a lot better than I thought he was.  Pitching from 1995-2005 sucks.
4.  In theory, since hitting is 55% of the hit equation pitching at low caps can be HORRENDOUS and still be okay.  I can't really do the math but a .200 BA hitter vs a .300 OAV pitcher is going to hit something like .245 in a vacuum.   A dude that never walks is still never going to walk against Dick Radatz.   I love 40 million caps.
5.   There was a time when the forums were far more active.   There weren't necessarily more intelligent threads but there were certainly a lot more.
6. Jfranco's defense thread and contrarian's  pitching thread are always worth a reread.  Those two guys are pretty damn smart.
7.  There is something magical about baseball.  Now that NBA finals are coming to a close, the ten weeks or so when MLB is the only pro sport going on (in America)  might be my favorite time of the year.   It also is usually the time of the year the Mets go on a 10-41 run....

TJ,

1. I thought your wife liked the beach less than you do - you love US so much you stayed to share these thought with us instead of communing with your beloved sand and surf and we are grateful for that.

2. I think you are on to something. In late rounds - around 5th through 7th, I need to double check for sure, I got: 1) an OF who played full time THAT  same season with 22 HRs, b) an OF who played full time the NEXT season with a pretty good avg. higher OBP than anyone I had on the team previously (not great but the team was a shambles) and 14 HRs, and 3) an IF who gives me 400 IP and a .240 BA and C/B defense next season. Now if you are contending this season, who cares. But if like me you are rebuilding, these guys get you through 2 full seasons in which you can use your high draft picks for something else and by combining 1 and 2 I essentially have a power hitting OF for 2 seasons from the 5th draft round on.

5. I have read this same thing lately and have just let the "WIS all time team" thread go without jumping in because the people posting are so cool and it is so great to hear their voices in the forums on what the WIS has been and meant. And still could.

6. I could not agree more.

7. I could not agree more.

Thanks for these. I feel like I am reading James Thurber when I log on to this thread. or something.

Sunday- August 5th, 2012

1.   A week off is really a nine day vacation if you do it right.  Go me!
2. If two pitchers are both eligible to come in and have the same role, Sparky chooses the pitcher with the lower OAV.
3. It doesn't take a french chef to make shrimp and scallops taste good.
4.  Everyone has an opinion on tanking in progressives, I think it's hard to totally stop but as long as I guy isn't blatantly trying to lose individual games on purpose I am okay with it.
5.  I find myself sort of emotionally attached to some players on my progressive teams.  Brooks Robinson's career is coming to end for one of my teams and I find myself unwilling to cut him loose.   I know there are better options at 3b for his last  three years or so but I don't want to let the Hoover Vac go.
6.  Generally speaking, my teams do pretty well (or at least better than they should) when I have strong defense up the middle (CF,SS, 2b) and not horrendous defense on the corners.   I almost never pay attention to catchers.   Much like my long college career, I am happy with D+.
7.   With that being said,  if you have the an opportunity to outhit the world, do that.  If you are interested, check out my Boston Red Sox team in a 1930's progressive.  We score like a bajillion runs a game (but now that I think about, I have at least average defense up the middle).
8. I have no idea how defense numerically effects pitching (and innings needed) but I know it does and it is "significant".  I am willing to bet something like A range defense up the middle saves pitchers about 20 innings (or 60 batters, or 240 pitches) a season over there expected performance.  Take that elbirdo!
9.  Every time I read a post that includes terms like "opposed roll" or "like rolling a hundred sided die"  I wonder  if the poster plays Dungeons and Dragons.
10.  I am convinced that merely logging on and checking your team three times a day adds about 5 tpo 10  wins a season to the average non math geek.   My teams really suffered this summer when I could live on line.  They're gonna flat out suck from August to November.
11. I am pretty sure I am the only American under 80 that uses reuses coffee grounds.

No, you're not - not with the way coffee prices have gone up lately....^^^^^^^^^^

Also, you can get two or three cups of coffee from one Keurig portion pack as well.  After brewing the first cup, take the portion pack and shake it up.  You can get another fine-tasting cup of coffee out of it.  You can get a third but it starts getting kind of weak.

After reading what I just typed, I feel like a real cheapskate...lol.

I can't believe I just discovered this thread.  This is great.

TJ, keep telling your sim secrets! :)

I understand the attachment to prog players who are good soldiers.  I've been going through a prolonged rebuilding phase with a 90's prog team... and Kent Merker and Luis Sojo have been endlessly useful in varied roles.  In 9 seasons Merker's gone 49-45 with 47 saves... and in 7 seasons Sojo, as a bench guy, has hit .289 and played every position except catcher and 1st base.

Especially during the down times, it's nice to have a handful of players who you can just re-up every year and have them do a half decent job.
8/6/2012 12:18 AM
I've got similar feelings for Lou Brock and Joe Torre in the J4MS progressive.   We've got 10 games left in the 1975 season (started in 1969) and they are #1 (brock) and #3 (Torre) in the all time hit list.  Only Pete Rose is between them.

Despite their careers coming to an end, I can't seem to let them go

[edit]:  Brock, in addition the being the hit leader is also:

#1 in games played (tied with teammate Johnny Bench and rival Billy Williams)
#1 in runs scored (53 more than 2nd place)
#3 in doubles
#9 in triples
#1 in stolen bases (470/646 - 2nd place is 307/398)
#1 in infield hits (291)
#1 in bunt hits (44)

Oh yeah... I get the "holding on too long" to progressive players.  I just rode Rod Carew all the way to the end... He wasn't horrible his last few years, but it would have been very easy to get a better first baseman.

I live a block and a half from Lehigh University, and walk two very cute dogs through the campus regularly. Students often stop and play with them, particularly coeds. Because the dogs are small (about 15 lbs,) girls frequently bend down to pet them. Constantly getting that down blouse view is not really a good thing. Additionally, a true sign that one is "getting old" occurs when one sees a young woman that one knows does not really "look good," but she looks good anyway.

I should try a progessive league sometime.

My favorite atheletes of all time (in no particular order)

OJ Simpson, bob McAdoo, Steve Kerr, Jimmer Ferdete, Kirk Gibson (cause he hit that homerun)

I've had a lot of time to think about this, here's a few more:

1. I like bigger leagues but I am starting to like the 16 team, 2 division, no playoff style. Mostly because it's easier to recruit and keep owners, partly because even when my team sucks, being in 7th place instead of 8th or 4th instead of 5th feels like something.
2. I know that ERC# isn't directly used but I find myself leaning on it a lot. Even in single season progressives, sometimes the difference between the AL and NL is significant.
3. For as long as I can remember, I only let guys steal if I think their success rate will be ~80% or higher. I like to evaluate how I think but this almost never changes.
4. I almost always set my INTENTIONAL WALKS setting to 1. See #3.
5. If you don't have a good to great defense, OAV is more important than BB/9.
6. There's a dude named UNKNOWN Palmer on one of the 1885 teams.
7. There's some really great first names in the old timers, Admiral, Rube, Schoolboy....although I do feel bad about the Dummy's.
8. I still spend a lot of time thinking about how to prevent tanking.
