What did you think of this, worth the time?

It was good, although the author seemed to go into it with an already very high admiration factor for Monroe, I prefer a bit more objective biography, although it was well written and researched.

Do audio books count?
I'm listening to "Pitching in a Pinch" by Christy Mathewson. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes history or baseball.

I just finished re-reading The Universal Baseball Association, Inc ... which is a book that probably appeals to a lot of people at WIS. I dunno, I just can't get into it.

bronxcheer, what did you think of that book? I found it pretty eye-opening, and somewhat disheartening. But a must read for anyone who wants to know the real power structure behind the game.

The Secret Apartment by Tom Garvey, ?About how Garvey secretly lived in an abandoned concession stand in Vet Stadium for two years. See why Tug McGraw told him if he got caught he would be buried in a gigantic hot dog roll !

Reading Rick Perlstein's "Reaganland: America's Right Turn 1976-1980" which shows how much of the craziness we have seen the last four years in fact was already around in the movement that brought Ronald Reagan to power and started America's decline as a nation.

Also, as an antidote, reading my friend Brian D'Agostino's "The Middle Class Fights Back: How Progressive Movements Can Restore Democracy in America", which is full of solid analysis and useful and plausible reform proposals. He has honored me by asking me to co-author the forthcoming second addition with him. So stayed tuned for that.

Two Christmas presents for my 12-year old nephew in the United States: David Halberstams's "Summer of '49" and "October 1964", two of the best baseball books I know. Kid's a good player on his Little League team too.

The Secret Apartment- what I didn’t know before starting the book was that Garvey was a nephew of the Nilon Brothers of Concession fame. People saw him all the time and just assume he belonged. He also talks about his Vietnam Experiences.

Some light reading to close out the year.

Is This Anything? (2020) by Jerry Seinfeld. His best standup bits going back to the 1970s. Kind of weird seeing them written out instead of performed, but enjoyable nevertheless. Good for bathroom reading, or a couple of pages in bed before falling sleep.

The Bronx Zoo (1979) Sparky Lyle and Peter Golenbock. Reread after about 35 years. This is an underrated gem, sort of lost in the long shadow cast by Ball Four. But if Bouton’s book gets the credit for trailblazing (and being better written, frankly), Lyle’s has on its side a far more dramatic season and three larger than life characters in Steinbrenner, Billy and Reggie.
