Here is some more irony for you:
I coached Navy in Bryant to back-to-back appearances in the national championship game in Seasons 100 and 101. That was before the playoffs, when your goal was to make the top bowl game. Navy lost both times. You can verify in stats>National Champions. I was pretty convinced at that point that Navy was never going to win a championship as long as the "elite" advantages were in place, so I moved on.
There are some non-elites that are better opportunities than others. Non-elites have won 69 championships in Bryant, for instance. So it can be done, but, boy, is it hard. When you do win it all, especially if you beat an "elite," it's very satisfying.
* Addendum: Navy has won two national championships: Stagg Season 26 (brendaniol) and Leahy Season 104 (slid64er).
