I'm surprised more people went with Hamilton over Bonds.

Both are good choices but Bonds should generate more runs against this caliber of pitching, even if he's playing a bit fatigued.

I went with Kelly over Bonds for PAs, positional flexibility, and I figured there would be more lefty pitchers and more homer-killing pitchers to counter Ruth and Bonds.

Here's my thought process for Hamilton over Bonds.

• The main goal is the cheapest 3 $15M players possible to allow for flexibility elsewhere in the roster.
• If I have to pay for 3 $15M players, they better be able to play all game, every game at 100%, without the need for rest.
• Unless he's hitting at the bottom of the order, Bonds won't be able to play all the time at 100% without a backup. And D+/D+ in RF at less than 100% isn't a risk I wanted to take.
• If I'm drafting a backup for them, I'm just adding to their price tag and I may as well take a more expensive $15M player with more PA instead.
• .377/.495# with 93 speed hitting leadoff in front of Hornsby and Ruth all game, every game? I'll live with the 150 or so PA I'll never use in exchange for that.
• I would never take Hamilton in any other league becuase I can't stomach the the waste of PA, but I honestly think he's a bargain for this league.
• I'm wasting at least $2.7M (150 PA x $18,088 per PA), if not more, on PA won't use but within the confines of this league, even with that waste, it still gives me more overall roster flexibility than drafting a player who's more expensive overall with less PA.
• B/A in CF is a nice bonus.
• I've never had luck with the elite Bonds seasons. For me, he never gets close to his AVG# or HR/100# numbers. The walks are always plentiful, but you won't cash in Ruth or Hornsby too many times on a walk. And becuase the other 2 stars will be hitting ahead of him, I think he will get stranded a lot.
• Of course, after writing all that, Bonds will sweep the MVPs in every league and every World Series winner will have drafted him.

In virtually every theme league I'm in that has Bonds, two things are true.
1. His sim OPS is the most off from his real life OPS (compared to other hitters).
2. He still always wins MVP.

It will be interesting to see how the Hamilton teams do compared to the Bonds teams.

My view would be:
1) Bonds will account for a better net run differential in 162 games even if he is slightly fatigued. This wouldn't normally be true in the high-cap leagues Bonds and Hamilton are draftable in, but against ~$30-35k/IP pitching I think it will be.
2) Even if he sits for some games, he'll do more to help you win the games he's in for than a 200k scrub will to make you lose the ones he's sitting for (compared to Hamilton being in all games).

Either or both of those may end up being untrue of course, but that's the bull case for Bonds.

Count me on the Bonds side of this argument - and I'm not generally a Bonds guy. Yes, he never hits for the homers expected but his walks and OBP always lead the league. I would rather have him batting lead off (acknowledging he will need a right handed platoon mate) than Hamilton as his OBP will beat him every time. In addition, I went with a homer park to help Hornsby and Ruth (and my other batters) and Bonds will take advantage of that much more than Hamilton.

Had deadball pitchers been allowed, I would've probably gone Hamilton over Bonds. But I do think that Bonds (in HR+ home parks) will hit 30-40 HRs.

Again, I will note that I chose Hamilton in large part for defense. An B/A centerfielder sandwiched in-between the virtual statues of Ruth and Singleton sounds less dire than a D+/D+ Bonds out there. I can live with the wasted ABs.
