As a Blue Jays fan who watched nearly game this year, a couple of the defense ratings are baffling:

INF Ernie Clement led the league in defensive WAR (per Baseball-Reference), yet here he’s given D range at 3B and D- at 1B/2B/SS.

OF Myles Straw finished 6th in defensive WAR, but he’s also tagged with D- range.

I don’t know how WIS is calculating this, but these guys aren’t fire hydrants. They’re quick, mobile defenders.

THANK YOU. i was going to post something similar from the perspective of a Braves fan. Somehow Nick Allen was also saddled with D- range, and the advanced defensive metrics (OAA, DRS, Fielding Run Value) rate him among the best defensive SS in all of baseball.

Same with Matt Olson - his advanced defensive stats and WAR all agree he's an elite defender at 1B, and yet his SLB 'range' is worse (C+) than Pete Alonso's (B-)!! There is no world in which Pete Alonso's defensive value comes anywhere close to Matt Olson's.

I'll be the first to admit I too have no idea how the sim calculates or accounts for defense, but these ratings are silly. Others have also mentioned Bobby Witt Jr's defensive ratings from 2024. I've no doubt that the undertaking would be incredibly difficult, but it would be nice to see WIS revamp its approach to defense.

There is no way Cal Raleigh is a D arm. He won the Platinum Glove last year!

WIS doesn’t normalize CS% or SB%, so in this larger bases and limited pick-off move world where SB are easier to come by, catchers arms take a ding as it’s based on a historical CS% not a seasonal one, which is why only 8 catchers with more than 400 PA have better than D arms in 2025.

After John Naylor resigned with the Mariners, I went to look up his WIS stats for 2025. His speed was 64 for his time with the Diamondbacks & 75 for his time with the Mariners (both very surprising given his lack of foot speed). Yet his speed for the overall combined season was 83! This is shocking on many levels, particularly since it is higher than average of his two partial seasons...
