My dad had a massive stroke and was in the hospital. After major surgery inside his skull he was recuperating. It was March. We had just been in Phoenix for Spring Training. Dad used to fly from Seattle every year and I'd drive over from San Diego to pick him up and we'd hit three or four games. It was the day after one of those trips that he had his stroke.
I flew to Seattle to be with him though he was not conscious when I got to the hospital. There was a TV on in the hospital room and they were showing Mariners highlights and Ichio Suzuki had hit a Home Run.
So just to keep talking like you do in these situations I said something like, "Hey, Dad, Ichiro hit a homer today!" And he woke up and said with incredible feebleness, "I - chi - ro" and then went back under.
He died 15 years ago. Heck, 15 years ago day-after-tomorrow, his birthday. I wish we had WIS then the two of us because he would have really liked re-living his life in baseball in the way that Tiger and Mariner did together.
