WIS Update 4/22/25 Topic

So the “every two weeks” update thing might’ve been a little optimistic. Hand up. We’ve got a lot going on behind the scenes, and while the updates are still coming, they may not always land on a perfect schedule. That said, we’re always active on Discord if you’ve got questions, feedback, or just want to talk all things WIS.

This update’s a good one though - some cool stuff is live, some cooler stuff is in the works, and we’re finally getting a bit louder about WhatIfSports in the wild.

The New WhatIfSports Shop is Live

We’ve officially launched the new WIS merch store. It’s not perfect - our vendor only allows three logos at a time (we know, we're working on it), but we wanted to get something out there and start expanding our merch options.

This isn’t a money-maker for us - it’s more about giving you a way to rep WhatIfSports in the real world. Branded merch with custom logos isn’t cheap, but after talking to a bunch of vendors, this was the best option to get started. We do have the option to swap logos out quarterly, so if your favorite game isn’t represented yet, it likely will be in the future.

We’ve got ideas for future drops - HBD team-specific logos, championship gear, limited releases, and more. This is a first step, but we’re excited about where it’s headed.

Roster Updates

2024 - 2025 NBA and NHL rosters have been updated and are now live.

Marketing - WhatIfSports In The Wild

We’re officially teaming up with Effectively Wild, the flagship podcast from Fangraphs. Starting this Friday, you’ll hear WhatIfSports as a featured sponsor.

This sponsorship is focused on bringing new users to Hardball Dynasty and SimLeague Baseball, marketing the $1 promo code for first-time seasons in both games. Effectively Wild is one of the most downloaded baseball podcasts in the world and hits our main demographic for new SLB and HBD users. If you’re a baseball fan, chances are you already listen to the show - if not, it’s a great one to check out.

We're excited about this opportunity because the podcast is generally crowdsourced, without sponsors or advertisers, but our audiences line up so well they were open to letting us in.

Thanks to a few users who helped point us in the right direction, we’re also exploring podcast partnerships in both football and basketball spaces.

Why this matters...

More new users means:

  • More active and competitive worlds
  • Faster world rollovers (especially in HBD)
  • More revenue = more developer time = fewer “sorry, that’s hardcoded” moments
  • A healthier, more modern WIS for the long haul

What We’re Working On Now

Revamped credit system for Hoops Dynasty (No rug pulls here—just changes to reward behaviors that make worlds healthier and more competitive)

New Chat System - Site mail’s had a good run, but it’s time for something better. A complete replacement for Site Mail is in the works. You’ll be able to send direct messages, create group chats, and communicate more easily across the site. Jordan J has been testing with users on Discord and we're putting the finishing touches on it.

The Foundation of a Mobile App - It’s early, but we’ve started laying the groundwork for a mobile app. This will open the door for easier updates, bug fixes, and quality-of-life improvements in the future. This is a priority - more updates on this coming.

Universal DH Coming to HBD - We’re preparing to roll out the Universal DH feature in HBD. We’re also evaluating additional CBA-style updates to launch alongside it. More details coming soon. **We will give sufficient heads up before this takes effect.**

Knowledge Base Overhaul - There’s a lot of helpful content - dev chats, user guides, community insights -but it’s scattered across multiple places. Jordan H is working on pulling it all together into something much more accessible. He may reach out to a few of you for input.

Community Spotlight: “Takeover to Title” by upsetcity

If you’re looking to level up your Hoops Dynasty game — or just curious how the top coaches build a winner — check out Takeover to Title, a new YouTube series from national title-winning coach upsetcity.

He’s walking through a full rebuild of a Division II program, covering everything from recruiting strategy to long-term roster planning. It’s a great resource for both new users and experienced users. All eyes on Fort Lewis - no pressure, upsetcity!!

That’s all for now. We’re making progress. It’s not always fast or flashy, but we’re committed to building something long-lasting. Thanks, as always, for being part of the ride.
