Season completed and came up short of the goal of not losing 100 with a final record of 62-100. Positive side - proved you can beat a MWR with leftover players. Biggest positive was we were 6th in the league in HR, which was expected when I assembled the team and playing in Cincinnati. I knew pitching would be weak and we finished with an ERA of just over 5. Defensively the biggest weak link was at 3B which I didn't expect. The previous season he had 16 errors in 162 games, this year the same player had 43 in 160 games. Had he had similar numbers as the year before our team would have been slightly above average defensively.
Here was my initial roster and my pre-season thoughts along with their final stats.
C
K. Rios - (FA 1yr/1.8M) Above Average bat, below average glove, I've had success with similar C before.
Hit .267 with 11 HR in 450 AB. To my surprise he won the AL gold Glove at C
1B -
Hack Hawkins - (WW) hope is he hits .250 with 25 HR. Solid D for 1B
.282/.347/468. 25 HR 73 RBI 15 SB. Defensively had 13 (+) plays at 1B
2B -
Alexei Rivero - (FA 1yr/4.1M) Low splits but based off career numbers can assume .275 with 30 HR. Good D at 2B
.222/.308/.401 20 HR. 12 (+) plays at 2B. Biggest Disappointment of the year.
SS
Chin-Feng Komatsu - (FA 1yr/2.5M) Former GG SS with just a little pop in his bat.
.195/.230/348 18 HR Defensively 22 (+) plays at SS
3B
Valerio Ontiveros - (FA 1yr/4.6M) Solid bat, Below AVG glove for 3B
.246/310/438. 32 HR 85 RBI. Offensive output overshadowed by Defensive woes.
LF
Gene Anderson - (FA 1yr/1.3M) Best seasons are in the past but should be solid for one more
.245/.299/.455 in 310 AB. Got off to a slow start and ended up on the bench. Had a solid 2nd half.
CF
Glenn Nunnally - (FA 1yr/4.6M) If sticks to past numbers should be 25-30 HR and .250 AVG. Ok D for CF.
Team MVP with 40 HR 97 RBI and a .278/352/.555 line.
RF
Charlie Locke - (WW) Hope the his 99 Power leads to 35+ HR playing in Cincy. Defense should be above average.
.212/.277/.454 37 HR and 90 RBI. Right about what I expected out of him.
DH
Terrence Clark (FA 1yr/4.3M) - If career number stay consistent 25-30 HR, 80-90 RBI, .250 AVG
.270/.323/.467 25 HR 76 RBI.
Backup C
Marc Sheffield - (R5) Good Arm, Pitch Calling, contact. could start vs LHP to give starter rest.
.282/.340/.357 in 227 AB. Pleasant find in the R5 draft
Backup IF
Mack Stubblefield - (FA 1yr/1.4M) Solid glove at SS/2B/CF. Could start vs LHP. Could get 20 HR in 400 AB
A couple stints on the DL only got him 151 AB
4th OF
Tomas Palmeiro - (R5) Platoon in RF with Locke
Locke's positive play paired with Palmeiro never hitting above .200 meant he didn't play much.
Util
Albert Bell - (R5)
Played a lot down the stretch and hit .264/.349/.396 in 182 AB.
SP
R.J. Martinez - (WW) Inning Eater, like his GB rating for Cincy
Ended up in the Bullpen with an 8-16 record with a 5.60 ERA
SP
Jemile Bradley - (WW) Another Inning Eating SP
4-13 with a 7.59 ERA - Didn't pitch much the second half.
SP
Floyd Kelton - (FA 1yr/3.4M) Will his health let him get to 180 IP?
9-13 with a 4.76 ERA in 210 Innings.
SP
Tito Lyon (FA 1yr/3.8M) Low control but solid splits.
5-18 with 5.04 ERA
SP
Pascual Campos (R5) Worry his GB/FB ratio will hurt in in Cincy
best SP of the bunch at 13-10 and a 4.67 ERA.
RP
Preston Short - (R5) Could throw multiple innings in relief or be a 5 inning SP.
Struggled in the long relief role (5.28 ERA in 79 IP) , was 3-0 in 8 starts with a 1.39 ERA.
RP
Duane Piatt - (R5) Low control is a concern but should be a decent RP.
3.05 ERA in 100 innings out of the bullpen. Pitching MVP before a season ending injury.
RP
Rico Berrios - (FA 1yr/3.9M) Hoping he performs better than his career ERA.
5.22 ERA in 39.2 IP
RP
Cecil Cross - (FA 1yr 3.7M) Durable RP who should be ready to pitch almost every day.
7.16 ERA in 55.1 IP
RP
Sidney Henley (FA 1yr 4.9M) Only glaring weakness is against Left handed bats.
4.04 ERA in 42.1 IP
RP
Jordany Arenciabia (FA 1yr/1.7M)
4.99 ERA in 57.2 IP - 61 Appearances where he gave up 1 run or less.
RP
Victor Melian (R5)
Sent to AAA 20 games in
