Why does it seem like a good amount of people pick teams that are already built and not try and build a team up from the bottom.
this is not a knock on anyone i am just trying to understand why. I thought it would be fun to see if i could bring a team up from not so good to good. it's been pretty tough, and I am learning with your guys help a lot. just trying to get what the thinking is.

The answer, I think, can be derived from a coach adhering to one of these two schools of thought:
1. I want to move up as quickly as possible to get my favorite Division I-A power conference or elite school.
2. I want to stay with one team (maybe my alma mater), even if they are in a lower division, and build a dynasty.

There are other motivational factors. I had a great time recently taking a D3 school that had never won a national championship in any world (McMurry) and winning it all in Dobie. But it took me 8 seasons to do it. Not everyone has that level of patience, even in a dynasty game.

Many coaches look for "recruiting advantages" based on LOCATION of the school. There are some schools that are highly sought after simply for that reason. D2: Humboldt and Valdosta State for example.

I've always liked to mix it up.

Currently I have two teams that are Elites that I've had for a while (Texas in Rockne, and Michigan in Heisman--got to both of those after having rebuilds at Texas A&M in both worlds though--although in Dobie I did have a stop at Miami for a while).

My other three teams are a combination of full rebuilds (Depaul in Dobie and Fresno State in Wilkinson), and a partial rebuild at D3 Occidental at Stagg.

this is interesting. for a long time i thought that people would just pick already made times because they wanted to just go and win and have an easier time with it, Its good to get different perspectives on things to straighten your views out. I wasn't judging you play the game how you want, I just didnt know.

I am still on the steep learning curve journey, as such I look for a conference that has no human coaches, or 1 coach where I can take a team in the opposite part of the conference. If the team has a human coached history I will schedule 2 or 3 non-conf games against coaches. If the school is a rebuild I'm going for as many Sim games as I can get until I have a decent recruiting record. My goal in the game right now is conference championships. I have just moved to D2 with a school that has a long coached history. Iam really looking forward at investing time into the game planning aspect. Lastly, I will not coach a team that has colors I don't like...or RL schools I don't like.

I’m in the same area of the learning curve as you. I might be a little further along but I’m close enough I know a lot of the questions you have. If you want to reach out when you have questions I’d be happy to help.

I actually did the opposite approach when I was new. The second team I picked up was Whittier in the Stagg SCAC which is an all human conference. I learned a LOT about the game in a little amount of time. This is because almost every game is against a top notch human coach, and many are very friendly and willing to help teach. Also, do not be afraid to experiment. If you're hiding out in one of these all SIM AI conferences you will get only 1 or 2 games a season from a human coached team in post season, how do you learn when your only chance to learn is once a month?

Thanks Frankum & Zewskiz and the rest. For years and years their has been one constant in this game: experienced coaches willing to help when asked. Much appreciated! I'll be looking you up some day...

Well, if Humboldt opened up.... how could one say no to that opportunity? I would learn to choke down the green/yellow... Living in WI, there is certainly enough of it to go around, lol.
